1. A Meditation on the House of Simon the Leper in Bethany and the Woman Who Broke the Alabaster Jar

The event that took place in the house of Simon the leper in Bethany is recorded in various forms in all four Gospels (Matt 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; Luke 7:36–50; John 12:1–8). Because it happened during the final week of Jesus’s public ministry, it held significant meaning for the Gospel writers. Through reflecting on this passage, Pastor David Jang emphasizes that on one hand, we must deeply ponder who Jesus is, and on the other hand, we must consider with what kind of love we ought to approach Him.

First, according to Mark 14:3, Jesus was having a meal in the house of Simon the leper in Bethany. The Greek word translated as “leper” here is the same term commonly used in the Old Testament for leprosy, yet it might have differed to some degree from modern-day Hansen’s disease in clinical terms. Nevertheless, traditionally, leprosy symbolized “uncleanness” or the need for separation from God. Pastor David Jang points out two key things here.

First, Jesus is willingly sharing a meal with someone deemed “unclean.” In the Jewish society of that time, a leper was segregated from the community and was unable to enter the Temple or normally interact with the general populace. Despite that, Jesus was eating in the house of Simon the leper in Bethany. This reveals that Jesus transcended legalistic and religious barriers and viewed people wholly through the lens of “love.” Pastor David Jang interprets Jesus entering and healing in the home of Simon the leper as a clear sign of what the gospel truly is. The gospel is the good news of the kingdom of God, extended toward sinners, the sick, and the weak. From a worldly perspective, it would seem fitting to keep someone like Simon in isolation, but the fact that he partook at Jesus’s table is the tangible embodiment of the gospel.

Second, there is the implicit significance of the name Simon. While Simon was a very common name in the Gospels (indeed Simon was the original name of Peter), Mark’s Gospel specifically distinguishes this person as “Simon the leper.” Pastor David Jang reminds us how familiar the name Simon would have been to the readers of the Gospels and connects it with the fact that Simon Peter was called as the chief disciple of Jesus. This indicates that the same grace which was extended to Peter applies equally to sinners and the sick. In those days, leprosy was often seen as “God’s judgment” or “spiritual impurity,” but by Jesus sharing a meal with such a man, He was in effect declaring His complete acceptance of him. Pastor David Jang says, “We must realize that we, too, were all spiritual lepers.” We also were dead in our sins and transgressions, unclean before the holiness of God; yet because of the love of Jesus Christ, we have been invited to fellowship at His table.

It is in this concrete and symbolic place—“the house of Simon the leper in Bethany”—that a woman approaches Jesus and breaks an alabaster jar of costly perfume, pure nard, over His head (Mark 14:3). Regarding this woman, Matthew’s Gospel describes her simply as “a woman,” Mark’s Gospel likewise calls her “a woman,” Luke’s Gospel recounts “a woman who had lived a sinful life” coming to Jesus in the house of Simon the Pharisee (possibly a different Simon) and pouring perfume while weeping, and John’s Gospel identifies her as Mary. There are differences in the details recorded by the authors, but all highlight the same or a similar event—namely, that this woman poured out very expensive perfume on Jesus, and they underscore the profound meaning of her loving and dedicated act.

Pastor David Jang focuses on the significance of the “nard” perfume. Nard was a high-grade fragrance extracted from the root of a plant gathered in the high mountain regions of the Himalayas, making it extremely rare and costly in the Palestinian area of that time. Purchasing one alabaster jar of this perfume would require about three hundred denarii—essentially a year’s wages for a common laborer. Hence, the woman’s complete outpouring of the jar over Jesus represents a symbolic act of giving “everything” she had. Pastor David Jang explains, “Before the Lord, this woman offered her most precious possession. She may have intuitively recognized the imminence of His death and resurrection, and that He was the true King.” Love does not calculate cost or return; the act of “giving without reserve” itself testifies to the essence of love.

From the woman’s action of breaking the alabaster jar and pouring out the perfume, we witness an unconditional love, or a “devotion without terms.” Pastor David Jang calls this “true discipleship, which always blooms from a love that appears wasteful.” Outwardly, her action may look irrational and wasteful, yet in the broader context of the Gospels, we see that her love was a prophetic and symbolic act foreshadowing Jesus’s death and resurrection. In the ancient Near East, anointing with oil was a ceremony that took place for very special offices, such as a king or priest. Through her immense love, she was proclaiming that Jesus was truly the Anointed One, the Messiah.

Moreover, in Luke 7:38, the woman is described weeping, kissing the feet of Jesus, soaking them with her tears, and wiping them with her hair. This highlights the humility of a sinner who barely dares stand before Jesus, yet with faith that trusts His holy love, she bows down and dedicates herself fully. Pastor David Jang especially focuses on her tears. These tears may have mixed emotions of gratitude for Jesus’s compassion, who accepts her despite her sinfulness and weakness, and the sorrow of foreseeing the death of the One she so deeply loves and reveres.

Thus, the story of the alabaster jar being broken in the house of Simon the leper in Bethany intertwines the significance of the setting (the unclean being healed and sharing a meal with Jesus) with the woman’s demonstration of absolute, unconditional love (breaking the most precious perfume and pouring it out). Together, these elements richly reveal Jesus’s true Messianic identity and the message of the gospel. Pastor David Jang emphasizes that this act of love discloses the foremost characteristic of the gospel—love given without conditions. If any part of us still measures, calculates, or compares, we risk deeming the woman’s love a “waste” or “squandering.” Yet the gospel declares, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men” (1 Cor 1:25), showing us that, by the world’s standards, love may appear wasteful—but it is actually God’s wisdom and the power of salvation.

In conclusion, Pastor David Jang describes this episode in Bethany as “the very heart of the gospel displayed in the lowest place, in the house of one cast out by society, where the most precious love unfolds.” Simon, who had been isolated by leprosy, was restored and dined with the Lord, and a woman thought to be a sinner broke her most valuable jar of perfume to serve Jesus in that same house. This is the tangible gospel, and the Lord still seeks this kind of love today—one that is never calculating, that may appear wasteful, and that is unconditional and offered without thought of return.


2. The Perspective of the Disciples and Judas Iscariot

In the Gospels, right after or in the midst of the alabaster jar breaking incident, the disciples’ reactions and the betrayal by Judas Iscariot are mentioned (Matt 26:8–16; Mark 14:4–11; Luke 22:3–6; John 12:4–6). Notably, Mark 14:4–5 shows that some spectators were indignant with the woman, saying to each other, “Why this waste of perfume?” Matthew 26:8 identifies these “some people” specifically as the disciples, while John 12:4–5 narrows it down to Judas Iscariot. Luke’s Gospel narrates how Simon the Pharisee (possibly another Simon) witnessed this act and questioned, “If this man were a prophet, He would know what kind of sinful woman is touching Him,” thus showing another angle of how people saw the woman’s anointing as not true love but wasteful or empty fervor.

Pastor David Jang observes, “To those who have never truly experienced love, a genuine act of love can sometimes appear to be ‘wasteful.’” Though the disciples and Judas heard Jesus’s words daily and witnessed many miracles, they did not fully grasp the essence of His love. John 12:4–6 indicates that while Judas condemned the perfume pouring as wasteful, claiming they could have sold it and given the money to the poor, he was in fact embezzling from the money bag. Pastor David Jang remarks that this shows “someone who remains outside the realm of love inevitably reveals a calculating and self-centered motive.”

Jesus rebukes the disciples’ objections by saying, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her?” (Mark 14:6). This shows that the Lord greatly appreciated her act, while simultaneously reproving the disciples’ attitude. Furthermore, Jesus declares that her deed was in preparation for His death and that it would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached (Mark 14:8–9). Pastor David Jang poses a crucial question: “Why is it that, witnessing the exact same event, some discern the secret of heaven while others see only waste?” The reason lies in “what fills their hearts.” Those with hearts filled with love do not regret breaking the alabaster jar. But those whose hearts have grown cold and whose gaze upon the Lord has become calculative see everything as wasteful and scheme only for their own gain.

Following this event, Judas Iscariot reaches a “decisive” turning point. According to the Gospels, he goes to the chief priests to betray Jesus for thirty silver coins (Matt 26:14–16; Mark 14:10–11; Luke 22:3–6). John 13:2 says, “the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.” Pastor David Jang reflects that the “alabaster jar incident” solidified Judas’s resolve to betray. Seeing his Teacher condone such a monumental extravagance, Judas likely ceased believing that Jesus was walking the path of the “Messianic kingdom” he had envisioned. In other words, Judas’s logic might have been, “If He were the true leader, He wouldn’t allow such a financial waste. Why let this chance to help the poor slip away?” Underneath, however, greed had already taken root; he was judging Christ’s ministry from a purely pragmatic standpoint, utterly failing to grasp the Lord’s heart and the nature of His love.

Among the disciples, Judas took the most extreme route of betrayal. Yet even the other disciples rebuked the woman’s action as wasteful (Matt 26:8). Pastor David Jang notes that we must treat this as a serious warning example. Even those who know and follow Jesus can still put profit or calculations ahead of love. Ultimately, on the eve of Jesus’s crucifixion, the disciples argued among themselves about who was the greatest (Luke 22:24), they scattered when He was arrested (Mark 14:50), and Peter was driven to deny the Lord three times (Mark 14:66–72). As Pastor David Jang repeatedly emphasizes, the disciples’ failure to relinquish their own standards and gain—even when standing before the Lord of love—mirrors “all of us.”

And yet, the Lord did not abandon them. After the Passover meal, He washed their feet, showing, “He loved them to the end” (see John 13:1). Ironically, the woman, widely regarded as a sinner, was the one who poured out a year’s worth of wages in perfume to anoint and prepare the Lord’s body for burial, while the disciples themselves were hesitant to express their own love and devotion. Pastor David Jang reiterates that “love is giving without reserve, and though it may look like waste, it is through such giving that true glory is revealed.” While the disciples’ perspective remained constrained by worldly logic, and Judas let greed pull him toward betrayal, the gospel proclaims “unconditional love” toward even such flawed, weak human beings.

Pastor David Jang urges us to reflect deeply on the disciples’ and Judas’s reactions, asking, “Might I have this tendency within myself?” Even if we have long attended church, drawn near to worship, and heard God’s Word, if our deepest heart remains calculative and self-centered, we risk labeling genuine love and devotion as “waste,” under the pretext of “right and wrong.” And in the worst case, we could end up, like Judas, betraying the Lord. Pastor David Jang warns, “Betraying the Lord isn’t limited to overtly ‘selling Jesus out.’ When we refuse the heart of sacrificial love within the church or in our faith life, and cling only to profit and calculation, then the seed of betraying the Lord of love has already taken root in our hearts.”


3. The Core of the Gospel: The Love That Appears Wasteful

Finally, we must focus on Jesus’s statement regarding the woman’s deed: “Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her” (Mark 14:9). This signifies that her act is inextricably linked to the gospel message. By human logic, it is wasteful and extravagant; yet precisely such “waste” defines the ultimate shape that the gospel aims for. Pastor David Jang states, “The gospel is, in essence, God’s holy lavishness toward us—His willingness to give up His only begotten Son.” God the Father gave His only Son for sinners, and Jesus poured Himself out on the cross as a sacrificial offering without sparing Himself, thereby atoning for our sins and granting us salvation.

From the perspective of “waste,” this idea parallels Paul’s proclamation in 1 Corinthians 1:18 and onward: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” In the eyes of this world, the cross is incomprehensible and entirely irrational—indeed, a “waste.” Why would an omnipotent God need to take on human form and die for sinners? Worldly wisdom can never grasp the “wisdom of God’s love” hidden there, which Pastor David Jang asserts is the crux of the gospel. The story of the woman breaking her alabaster jar and pouring out its contents likewise carries “the symbolic message that only those unafraid to appear wasteful before the Lord can genuinely experience the depths of the gospel.”

Hence, this account does not merely depict a touching scene from a distant town in bygone days. It compels us, here and now, to examine the extent to which our faith and life embody “total devotion,” a love that seems “wasteful.” Pastor David Jang enumerates practical examples regarding our time, finances, talents, and even the posture of our dedication. When you allocate your time for worship and prayer, give generously for the purposes of God’s kingdom, or devote your talents entirely for God’s glory, people around you may protest, “Why do you go to such extremes? Why not keep things moderate?” However, true love continues to give to the Lord no matter the opinions of bystanders.

Pastor David Jang also cautions that the alabaster jar event had a particular relevance to the “anointing of Jesus for His burial” (Mark 14:8). Jesus would soon die on the cross as the atoning sacrifice and would rise again to bring everlasting life. This woman, perhaps more than anyone else, perceived in love the impending fate of Jesus—His “future”—and responded. “When one truly loves, one catches a glimpse of the future.” By loving Jesus wholeheartedly, she may have intuited His approaching death and resurrection. Even while the disciples were denying the possibility—“This shall never happen to you, Lord” (Matt 16:22)—and fighting among themselves without understanding the path of the cross (Mark 10:35–45), she boldly showed her devotion at the banquet, breaking her alabaster jar and, in her own way, grasping “the real path” of Jesus. In this sense, Pastor David Jang advocates that “love is the key to spiritual insight.” There are aspects of Jesus’s way we cannot know by mere head knowledge or theology but can sense and join through love.

Furthermore, Pastor David Jang asserts that if we lose sight of “wasteful love” as the core of the gospel, our churches today can easily mirror the disciples or Judas—becoming mired in self-centered perspectives, criticism, and strife. People may compare who serves more or who gives more offerings, or they may feel uneasy about someone’s devotion, asking, “Why such excess?” But in a true gospel-centered community, where the gospel is proclaimed in its fullness, we do what Jesus commanded: remember and celebrate the woman who broke the alabaster jar for Him, and together, with one accord, glorify the Lord for such love.

According to Pastor David Jang, “The purpose of spreading the gospel is not merely expanding church membership or attaining individual success, but rather embodying ‘selfless giving love’ in our daily lives.” This is what ultimately glorifies God and bears living witness to the gospel for our neighbors. Just as Jesus, the grain of wheat, fell into the ground and died to bear much fruit (John 12:24), we too, when we imitate the Lord and choose to be “spent” for others, spread Christ’s fragrance to the world and reveal the reality of God’s kingdom.

In conclusion, the story of the woman who broke the alabaster jar is recorded differently by each Gospel writer, yet they convey the same message: “No act of love given to God is ever wasted.” To those who have lost love, it may look like mere waste. But from the gospel’s vantage, the love that seems squandered is in fact the wellspring of life and salvation. Pastor David Jang repeatedly insists, “The cross of our Lord is the supreme manifestation of an omnipotent God choosing a method that appears foolish and wasteful—yet this is the pinnacle of love. Those who accept that love become those willing to break the alabaster jar for the Lord, even if it appears extravagant in the world’s eyes. The power of the gospel resides in that seeming waste.”

Each of us must decide whether we have the courage to “break the alabaster jar” in concrete moments of life. Even seasoned believers may be bound by pragmatic, calculated thinking, not entirely free from concerns about benefit or gain. But if we have truly experienced the love of the cross, and, as Pastor David Jang reminds us, “recognized that we were once all spiritual lepers whom the Lord has healed,” then we will understand that devoting our all to the Lord is never too costly. That alabaster jar might be our finances, our time, our talents, or our future plans. For some, it could be a matter of pride or worldly position. Whatever it is we treasure more than the Lord, in “breaking” it and surrendering it to Him, we offer a most fragrant act of worship.

Pastor David Jang concludes this third section by summarizing, “The gospel is God’s saving plan completed by a ‘wasteful act of love,’ and our participation in that salvation likewise begins with a decision to pour out ourselves in love.” The starting point is realizing that “the Lord has already been wasted for my sake.” The cross of Jesus was the greatest example of an alabaster jar broken. Because He gave us everything He had, we can know that love and in turn offer it back to Him and to others. Whether to the poor, the sick, or someone in our church community with whom we struggle, we can still break the jar and pour out the perfume of the Lord. Such sacrificial love will never be in vain; the Lord Himself promised that wherever the gospel is proclaimed, it would be remembered and honored.

Ultimately, God’s great love always appears “wasteful.” Yet it is precisely that seeming wastefulness which brings life to the world. We must remember the disciples’ and Judas’s failings, while also recalling that we, like Simon the leper in Bethany, have received healing and acceptance from the Lord. Then, in thankfulness and love, we should come before Him like the woman who broke the alabaster jar, offering the most precious aspects of our lives in a worshipful commitment. This is the essence of the gospel that Pastor David Jang persistently underscores, and it is the path of discipleship we must walk. Even if voices deride it as “foolish waste,” the Lord will never overlook such love but has promised, “Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told.” May we each resolve to live a life of breaking the alabaster jar.
